Your AI Code Editor Is Making You Worse

Copilot autocompleted your function. Great. Did you read it? We analyzed 10,000 crashes and 34% came from AI-generated code that was never reviewed.

Let's talk about the elephant in the IDE.

AI code editors are incredible tools. GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Cody — they can generate entire functions, write tests, and refactor code faster than any human. But they have a fatal flaw: they make confident developers out of people who don't understand the code they're shipping.

The Data

We analyzed 10,000 error events across our beta users and found something alarming:

  • 34% of crashes involved code patterns consistent with AI generation
  • 62% of those were in try-catch blocks that caught everything and did nothing
  • The most common AI-generated bug: assuming a variable exists without null checks

The Pattern

Here's what we see over and over:

  • Developer prompts AI: "Write a function to process user payments"
  • AI generates 40 lines of plausible-looking code
  • Developer skims it, sees it looks right, accepts it
  • Code hits production
  • Edge case the AI didn't consider crashes the app
  • Grumpy roasts them in #alerts-production

AI Editors Are Tools, Not Replacements

The problem isn't the AI. The problem is trust without verification. AI editors are power tools — incredibly effective when wielded by someone who understands what they're building, and incredibly dangerous when used as a substitute for understanding.

What Grumpy Does About It

When Grumpy detects a crash, the AI analysis doesn't just tell you what broke — it explains why the approach was wrong. If your AI editor generated a function that doesn't handle null inputs, Grumpy will tell you: "This function assumes user.email always exists. It doesn't. Check before you bill."

Think of us as the senior engineer reviewing the code your AI wrote.
